A top ranked varsity in US – University of South Florida announced that it would commence a scholarship of worth 1 Crore to one Indian student to pursue post graduation from next academic year. The scholarship is to be named after former Indian President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam. Any Indian seeking to pursue PhD in specified fields of science and engineering at the University of South Florida can apply to the scholarship.
The recipients will get a fee waiver for four years amounting to $84,500 and a scholarship of worth 18,000 $ annually.
University of South Florida’s Vice Provost, and System Associate Vice President for Global Academic Programs, Roger Brindley, wrote a letter to Ponraj Vellaichamy, the Scientific Advisor to APJ Abdul Kalam “Like all of India – and the world – we heard of his passing away with great sorrow. I want to commend you and his family for the wonderful work you are doing to perpetuate his legacy,” he said in the letter as per The Hindu.
He also reminded about Kalam’s association with university when he delivered a speech on green energy in 2012.
Mr. Ponraj said he was extremely happy that the University of South Florida had chosen to offer such a huge scholarship to Indian students desiring to pursue research in the US. “There cannot be a more fitting tribute to a former Indian President by a foreign university,” he said
