On 1st December, Lucknow inaugurated the trial of its first metro train at the Transport Nagar Metro Depot. The course of the train ended at the Charbagh Railway Station in Lucknow.

Two women operators: Prachi and Pratibha Sharma, led the first trial run. They drove the four-coach train on an 8.5 km stretch covering six stations.

Pratibha and Prachi Sharma, both hail from Allahabad. Pratibha earned her B.Tech in Electronics and Communication Engineering from SRMS College of Engineering and Technology, Bareilly. And Prachi did her Diploma in Electrical Engineering from Institute of Engineering and Rural Technology (IERT), Allahabad. Both joined Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation (LMRC) as station controller-cum-train operators in June.

Lucknow Metro: LMRC recruits 21 women

The train operator job is considered an unusual profession for women. Therefore, the decision of LRMC to choose women operators for the job is a breakthrough in changing this societal mindset. While there was a total of 97 vacancies for train operators’ job in Lucknow Metro, 19% of the 3800 applications, came from women. LMRC recruited a total of 21 women station controller-cum-train operators.

“We have chosen two women operators to drive the Metro train before the CM and public for the first time. Our women train operators are so confident and excited to drive it that they wished to take lead in the trials. They have undergone rigorous training, both at the Centre of Excellence of Lucknow Metro Rail Corporation and hands-on training at the Delhi Rail Corporation,” LMRC Managing Director Kumar Keshav told Times Of India.

Over the past few decades, women have appreciably progressed and have achieved great positions in their workplaces. As a result of their dedication, their formidable performance has helped them advance in every field they have chosen.

The Positive India congratulates and salutes all such women like Prachi and Pratibha Sharma who believe in their ability to excel in any field.
