Thin, frail, emaciated and sporting a shy smile, Palam Kalyanasundaram looks like your next-door neighbor’s old, but affectionate grandpa. Once you get to talk to him, the fire and determination in him shine forth through his words. He speaks in a childlike manner, and his voice, too, is high-pitched, but as you listen, you are awestruck at the yeoman service he has done for humanity. He has received several awards and has donated Rs 30 crore of prize money he got from these honors.
The young librarian served his company effortlessly and donated his entire monthly salary to the orphans. He continued to do so, until his retirement. To add more, this amazing and inspiring man never married with the intention to serve his country by his kindness. Kalyanasundaram also donated his monthly pension to the needy orphans.
The past life of Kalyanasundaram will amaze you and take you to a different world of kindness. A normal looking grandpa figure has been through a list of struggles in his past life. He was motivated and inspired by his mother to help the poor and needy. Kalyanasundaram lost his father at a tender age. Kalyanasundaram strongly believes in words said to him by Thamizhvanan, writer of self-improvement books, “Don’t bother about how you speak. Strive to make others speak good about you.” These words were used by the great writer to bring Kalyanasundaram out of the discouragement of his feminist voice.
REWARDS AND ACHIEVEMENTS
He was awarded a sum of Rs. 30 crores as a part of his contributions towards the benefit of orphans by an American organization; however, he gave the lump sum money in charity. He is among the first persons in the world to have donated his entire salary to the needy. The list of awards does not end from the Life Time of Service Award to the Rotary Club of India. Kalyanasundaram is among the top 10 librarians in the world. He also won the award of the best librarian in India, by the Union Government.
Mr. Rajinikanth announced Mr. Kalyanasundaram to be his adopted Father. After 15 days of the hospitable treatment, Mr. Kalyana Sundaram requested them to let him go since he felt imprisoned and there were people who needed him.
DONATING HIS ENTIRE BODY
When the ultimate question of death kept cropping up in Mr. Kalyan Sundaram’s life and he decided that this too must be done in true Kalyana Sundaram style! He went to the Dean of Tirunelveli Medical College and told him on his death he would like to donate his entire body for scientific research.
Palam Kalyanasundaram lives a simple life all on his own in a small house in Saidapet, Chennai. He never married for the simple reason that he did not want to spend all that he earned on charity. Even today, he comes to office at Adyar regularly and does whatever he can for the uplift of the underprivileged people.
