How a coolie’s son built 100 crore firm selling Idly batter

                Success doesn’t come easy. You have to struggle for it. Everyday might not turn out as you’d expect it to, but if you work at it, you’ll get there.

               PC Musthafa is an inspiring example of the same. This man, a son of a coolie, who failed Class 6 built a ₹100 crore company for himself! .

            PC Musthafa, as a young graduate from NIT Calicut decided to give up his well paid job in Dubai to return home to give back to society. He had a good work experience and has saved about 15 Lakhs after a few years of work. Now he started looking for some ideas to become a entrepreneur. But he didn’t succeed so he decided to go for MBA and gave CAT, secured admission in IIM-B. Even during  his days at IIMB , PC Musthafa he used to think about ideas to startup.

One day one of his cousin told him that he saw a local kirana shop selling dosa batter in a plastic  cover with a rubber band and suggested him – ‘Let’s sell batter’.  Musthafa liked the idea and decided to invest 25,000 right away and started the company with a small place of around 550 square feet and started with two grinders, a mixer and a sealing machine. There were four of his cousins together and they looked after operations. They named the product – ID Fresh

Initially they targeted local stores and at the end of 9th month they were selling 100 packets a day. After tasting initial success they moved to bigger kitchen with 2,000 Kgs capacity with 15 wet grinders. In 2007, I got my MBA and officially joined as the CEO in charge of marketing and finance. Till then, I was only remotely participating in the operation along with my cousins.

In two years, we increased the capacity to 3,500 kg a day. The number of stores they partnered with increased to 300, 400. As the demand increased, they decided to have a proper manufacturing plant in an industrial area. We were making a decent 10 to 12 per cent profit every month.

In 2012, they expanded to other cities like Chennai, Mangaluru, Mumbai, Pune and Hyderabad. Today, we produce around 50,000 kg in our plant. The total investment must be around Rs 4 crore (Rs 40 million) and our revenue is Rs 100 crore (Rs 1 billion). When we became a Rs 100 crore company in October 2015, we celebrated in grand scale. We have grown from producing 10 packets a day in 2005, with just my cousin managing the kitchen, to 50,000 packets a day with 1,100 employees in 10 years

Every time PC Musthafa hires a person, he ensures that the person is from rural area. Being born in Waynand to coolie and having no electricity access and failing in 6th standard , very weak in English due to rural back ground, humiliation from fellow students for being poor – nothing could stop the success of P C Musthafa. Even after reaching pinnacleof success , his humbleness is something everyone should learn
