When the country is suffering from a tremendous difference in the male is to female sex ratio, a girl from Haryana challenged herself to make some difference. Poonam, a resident of Haryana is the daughter of a school teacher in Bilawal Village. She is a post graduate and has been actively involved in the various social causes that have taken place in and around her residence. She was highly motivated by the concept of “Beti Bachao Beti Padhao” movement which has seen an upsurge in recent years. Although she had previously heard of the eighth phera introduced in marriage ritual to prevent female foeticide, she wanted to do something more effective.
So, on her marriage day, just before the seven holy vows, Poonam demands her groom Sandeep from Jajjhar to promise that he would ensure secured education of 11 girls from their community. Her innovative idea put everyone to surprise. Sandeep did not hesitate to give positive acknowledgment to her terms. All the people attending the wedding witnessed the noble cause on which the couple made their vows.
Poonam had previously been aware of the various campaigns adopted on the issues to promote women empowerment. They have hardly been a success. She decided to take this remarkable step as she wanted to bring out a definite assurance about the change she plans in her mond!
“But I know that most campaigns rarely see success. Keeping this in mind, I wanted to do something challenging and something that will really change some lives,” she said to TOI.
