Telangana’s festival of life breaks guinness world records

Indian culture is an amalgamation of multifarious religions, languages and customs. One thing that marks the cultural richness and heritage of our country is festivals and the lustrous celebrations that involve capturing music, dance, food and many more. One such festival is the “Bathukamma”.

The enthralling flower festival of Bathukamma is celebrated in Telangana state with great fervor and pomp. Celebrated in the Bhadrapada Amavasya, Bathukamma festival involves 9-day festivities during Navratri, representing the cultural spirit of Telangana. Bathukamma is a beautiful flower stack, arranged with different unique seasonal flowers in seven concentric layers in the shape of a temple gopuram.

Today, the entire world has witnessed the enormity and significance of Bathukamma as it entered the Guinness Book of World Records with 9,292 women participating in the ceremony at LB Stadium, Hyderabad, along with Tennis star Sania Mirza.

The Guinness world record representative has congratulated the people of Telangana on achieving the feat and for bringing glory to the Bathukamma festival with 9,292 women participating in the celebrations in spite of heavy rains.

Bathukamma, a festival for feminine felicitation showcases the indwelling connection between the Earth and the humans. The celebrations involve bringing humans closer to nature and worshipping Goddess Durga with a plethora of seasonal flowers. The process of preparing Bathukamma is an interesting and alluring folk art. All the women decorate the deity of Bathukamma on a wide plate called   spread with big leaves. The seasonal flowers like Celosia are used in the preparation. A variety of flowers which have great medicinal value are used and are stacked up in a conical mound. On top of the stack sits the Gouramma, a symbolic idol of Goddess Gowri made of turmeric.

The flower arrangement, the Bathukamma is immersed in a pond. Interestingly, the flower arrangement floats in the water and remains intact until it drowns in water. It is believed that the immersion of these flowers and turmeric deities purifies water and also helps reinforce the ponds. It is a feast to the eyes to witness this beautiful view of thousands of Bathukamma idols floating on the water.

A large number of people gathered at the LB stadium today, to take part in the festivities of Bathukamma. The celebrations started at 5:12 pm on 8th October, with stunning dance performances by thousands of women who went round the Maha Bathukamma signing and dancing to the tune of Bathukamma songs. The enthusiastic crowd formed 35 concentric circles around the 20-feet Maha Bathukamma idol and danced in joy as they created history entering the record books. The grand event was jointly organised by the Telangana Tourism Department and the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) besides several other departments. The planning and coordination by various government departments led to the grand success of the event.

After achieving this great feat, the celebrations in Telangana have heightened up. The Government and the people of Telangana hope that this achievement would help them attract more tourists and also bring recognition to their rich culture.
