Mariyappan Thangavelu bagged the gold and Varun Bhati a bronze medal in Paralympics. This was in men’s T42 High Jump event. This happened on day two of the Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. However, Sharad Kumar couldn’t finish on the podium along with his fellow teammates. Sharad Kumar from Patna is an Indian athlete in 55kg category while Bhati is a high jumper from Uttar Pradesh.
Thangavelu won the gold medal and his best jump was recorded as 1.8 meters while Bhati’s record was 1.86m. Kumar, on the other hand finished sixth in his sport.
HEATED UP COMPETITION AT PARALYMPICS
Competition heated up because 6 out of 12 athletes had easily cleared the mark of 1.74m in the first 8 attempts. Maiyappan, on the other hand, cleared the 1.77m mark in his 10th attempt. He was accompanied with 3 more athletes and Kumar was one of them. The competition was then narrowed down.
Bhati was just one step away from gold. He had cleared 1.83m mark along with Mariyappan. When everyone presumed the top 2 spots in favor of India, the American athlete took away the thunder. He cleared the hurdle with the 1.86m mark. The competition got even more interesting when the Indian players gave his a tough fight and leveled the score.
Ultimately, it was Mariyappan who bagged the gold in Brazil with an astonishing record of 1.89m. Varun Bhati on the other hand grabbed the bronze with a 1.86m mark. We are proud of both the Indian players!
