The dictionary states ’Sarpanch’ as the village headman literally. In India, he is deemed to be the person who is conventional, with minimum qualification, heading the village for a political agenda. What if now this idea gets a complete turnover? Yes, Chhavi Rajawat the Sarpanch of Soda Village of Tonk district in the state of Rajasthan is all set to make the change.
She graduated from Lady Shri Ram College in DU, completing her MBA from Pune. She was dissatisfied with all the facilities and the big job offers. Rejecting all the tempting corporate brands, Chhavi decides to pay a tribute to her motherland in Soda village. She was working as a senior executive in Bharati Telecom, when it struck her to fight for the Sarpanch’s post in her village. Her tenure as a Sarpanch in the village saw development at a new level. From harvesting of rainwater, improving sanitation to education Chhavi aims to promote 100% literacy in her village. She ensured toilets in every household completely abolishing the practice of open defecation. Her works on literacy programme has enabled all the children of her village to attend the schools and attain the basic primary education within the village domain.
She does not have any political agenda nor does she strive to gain one. Her innate want for the welfare of the deprived villagers where she was born made her quit her job. Educated and motivated to uplift the position of the backward villages, she managed to bring her village in the limelight with all the endeavours and progress. She successfully fought evils of child labour and ensured that the village be sufficed with proper electricity and water facilities. Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam awarded her endeavour on the Technology Day function. To mention some more of her works is abolishing the dowry and alcohol system, getting the government schools and hospitals get a new shape improving the living standards of the village inmate. The government hospitals which previously failed to provide proper healthcare facilities to the inmates of the village. Moreover, the schools have been operating properly since Chhavi has undertaken the responsibility as a Sarpanch in Soda. She has been successful in eliminating the habit of men drinking and creating commotion within the village premises. Dowry which has been plying as a social evil in the Soda society has made its way out of the village as she has taken strict step to get rid of it.
An educated lady stepping forwards for the welfare of the village and in a broader aspect for the nation calls for praises and appreciation. Rajawat further calls on the young and educated minds in the country to assist her in the endeavour. She asks the youth to get the country a complete different position by coming forward to help the underprivileged sections of the society. She has also made her reach to the United Nations creating Soda Village a model which should be adored by the world.
